Historical Pep-Up for the Ingres Pros !
Before I log off for the day , I am confronted with a new joinee in our team.
And her question : How does working in a legacy tech help me in my career?
Not that this is an amazingly original question, but over the years in my company I have definitely realised that though each one of us understands the limited value of such tech aginst the more "HOT" techs on the market, we still try to boost the morale of the new joinees at least till the time that they themselves have attained the fullfillment of thier quest for enlightment..."Self-Realisation" for short.
I remember asking the same question to my seniors on the project .And the answers?
Sample these pep-ups :
1) Now why would you be concerned with tech.Focus on the business and increase your expertise on the domain knowledge!
2) Hey U arent going to be coding all your life...Just stick on for a few years and before you know , you'll be a Project Manager, who needen't know anything other than excel and Lotus Notes!
3) The branding of a tech as "Good" or "Bad" is just a matter of perception and a result of a hype which is created at our educational institutions.You have been picked up since this a tuff tech and we recognise your worth (through your performance at our Inhose Training) to contribute to our Knowledge assets!
4) Every tech ought to be measured by the revenue it brings in to your company.And this tech is the one which is byfar the most rewarding for us.Congrats on being chosen to be a part of our "Golden Basket" !
5) COncentrate on the oppurtunities.Not many people benefit from seeing the tech evolution up-close.You oughta thank your lucky stars to start from the near-begining!
6) This is an age of speacialisation.And you are now a niche-product! So what if there is no market demand for the product anymore...Aren't you loyal to the company?You are ...so why worry about the market!You should worry only if you want to switch companies for good!
Huh..If only we really belived the crap!!!
For the record , our ex-PL who gave us lotsa gyaan about this has now married and wants to relocate to her hubby's place.But no projects ready to take her in...
Reason : What's an experience worth if it's in Ingres! You gotta train urself in something current (in other words-start from scratch...ur no good!) and then probably we can adjust you somewhere!
And I gave my new trainee team member Points # 1 ,2 and 3 mentioned above.
