It's like the 1800s again. Hardly had we grown out of iraqi invasion of Kuwait, US invasions of Iraq, Afghanistan and Russian invasion of Ukraine, that saudi has invaded Yemen. US is signing deals with Saudi and Iran, and both these nations war against each other.
It is in this backdrop, and blinded by its hate and insecurity of Iran, that Saudi Arabia has invaded Yemen. Is Saudi involved in this war to help yemenis or liberate them or for its own hegemonic motives?
To begin with, There was no legitimate govt in Yemen, and here we have saudi and Arab league reacting without a UN mandate. The Houthis were known so far as opposition to Al Qaeda which saudi claims to fight itself. Houthis do represent a section of Yemenis. was there not a way to have a political solution instead of having a foriegn country coming in and bombing them. Is the bombing going to bring Houthis to the negotiations table?
While Yemen has been anarchic for some time it is debatable whether a political solution was or is possible. And Iran was also always very involved in aiding sections within Yemen , so foriegn intervention is not really new.
However saudis were responsible in a way for Houthis to gain legitimacy when they did not allow a democratic rather popular solution to find place when revolution overthrew the previous despot in 2012. Saudis wanted remnants of previous corrupt government to be in power in the shape of Hadi. That made Houthis challenge Haidi and claim valid representation of a section of its people.
Now saudi is bombing Yemen and not allowing Iran to take control. Yemen has always had tribal friction but what gives authoritarian backward fundamentalist dictatorship the legitimacy to get in and bomb another nation? And why then is Iran's arming of Houthis to be considered evil?
It is clear Saudi has used Yemen to create a new Arab Sunni army of tyrannical regimes with questionable human right records... an additional military force in the middle east that adds another dimension to the tensions of the middle east.
Saudis warmongering, unfortunately is being supported by US and Israel, and Saudi will bring war on itself. Remember Saudi is behind majority of terrorism in the region, and karma in my view will catch up. Also it is very clear that Saudi decided to take matters into its own hands when it realised beyond any doubts that US and Israel will not really counter Iran effectively in its backyard.
Iran has in last few years gained considerable influence in at least 4 countries- Iraq, Bahrain, Lebanon and Yemen. Im additiom Syria has not fully slipped out. Palestine hamas have always recieved considerable help from Iran too, although it does not add to Iranian sphere of influence but does add to its PR value in Arab world. Now these 4 countries i mentioned are the countries which are being unsettled by Saudi Arabia intervention to counter Iran's influence.
There is a new found sunni agression ( or i shoukd say insecurity) in the ME and unfortunately western powers are playing into their hands by supporting one against the other and disturbing the fragile balance between Shias and sunni.
The yemen strikes will definitely fuel a larger regional conflict, comes at it does on the back of a united Arab military force. In our own backyard, pakistan first declared to send it's troops to help saudi and then quickly retracted. It's hardly a political decision in pakistan and the army, the real state, seems to have pulled it in. There are already enough fronts the pakistan defense establishment has open within pakistan to involve themselves with shady goals of this invasion. If there is but a larger involvement, the jehad will quickly reach pakistan itself. Pakistan is largely sunni but there is a sizeable shia minority that, if involved in a civil war, can bring anarchy on the streets of pakistan. In such an eventuality, considering pakistan is a nuclear nation, it won't be surprising that UN asks for greater control in governance of the armaments and intervene.
Such an internarional intervention will eventually be good for India, and hence this new flared fitna is good for india in the long run. It also helps give a much more stable option to the people of azad kashmir for example, where the minority shia community is also much victimised. A stretched pakistan establishment is unlikely to contain the heightened dissatisfaction within its own occupied Baloch and Pashtu regions, not to speak of the discontent Sindh and other regions have with overbearing Punjab. A shia sunni conflict has the potential to cripple and dismember Pakistan rapidly.
This is my amateur reading of a very complex situation. I don't pose to be any authority on ME or Islamic matters. Just crystal ball gazing :)
